#36 Are You on a Road to Nowhere with Miné Esen
Wednesday Mar 01, 2023
Wednesday Mar 01, 2023
Most people want to be happy.
The problem is, they have no idea what will actually bring them happiness. They only know they don’t have it.
People think that “happy” is the solution to their sucky life. But it’s not. Knowing what you want, and taking the steps to get it is. People are most happy when they know EXACTLY what they want and are working towards it.
If you don’t know where you are going, every road will get you nowhere. –Henry Kissinger
Have you ever tried to order take-out when you had no idea what you wanted? You were probably hungry when you started looking at menus. But you couldn’t decide, so you looked at another menu, then another. Next thing you know an hour passed. You’re frustrated, and you still haven't ordered. Had you known what you wanted, you’d already have your food. You’d feel the pleasure of your success.
When it comes to making career moves, you have to know exactly what you want.
Otherwise, things go like this…
You’re miserable in your career, but don’t know what you want to do next.
You peruse Linkedin and job boards hoping something will stand out. But nothing does.
All you can see is how you’re not qualified, you don’t have the experience, or how the job could be terrible.
You know you need to get out of where you are, so you apply anyway. You send resumes, to any and all positions. You copy and paste versions of your best cover letters. And you cross your fingers hoping for the best.
Occasionally you get called for an interview. You do your best to present exactly who you think they need. Tracking everything they say, trying to figure out exactly what they want. Thinking to yourself, “Please hire me, I’ve got to get out of my stupid job.”
They ask if you have questions. You ask a simple one, so you seem interested. But you’re really afraid of asking the wrong thing and putting them off.
Eventually, someone hires you. And almost immediately, you realize it’s not the job for you. So the cycle starts all over again.
As a career empowerment coach, I've seen too many people struggle to try and figure out what they want in their careers. And that's why I love talking to people who've already done it on my podcast, Be the Wolf.
When you are 100% clear on what you want…when you know exactly where you’re going…it’s easy to make the RIGHT moves that get you there. In your career and out of it. 😉 You have the motivation to keep going–even when it’s hard. And that is exactly what Miné Esen did. She came to the US with 3 cents in her pocket, but she had a clear vision of what she wanted and where she was going.
Join us on Be the Wolf to hear how she overcame obstacle after obstacle to make her vision a reality.

It’s been hardwired into women for generations that career comes second to marriage and kids. That they should sacrifice all their needs and wants in exchange for a family.
In fact, in the 1950s, most women who went to college were after a ‘Mrs degree’ (term for going to college to find a husband). But what these women were really after was security and stability. Because if they had a man with a good job, they would be safe.
The problem with this model is you have to depend on a man for your survival. You trade autonomy and control over your own life for security. And if the relationship is terrible, your choices are: stay and suffer or leave and risk homelessness or starvation.
And even though women know they don’t “need” a man to survive anymore that old programming is still there. They think they’ll have to give up their career to start a family. And when that’s the case, why find a perfect-for-you career you love–only to have to give it up? (Giving up what you love is hard and painful.)
Perhaps you can relate.
Maybe you didn’t meet the “one” in college, but you knew it’d happen one day. Plenty of women are getting married and having kids in their 30s.
You knew you needed a degree to get a job. But you didn’t put much effort into figuring out your dream career in college. Instead, you studied something that you liked but it had minimal real-world application. You didn’t do any internships or find a mentor. Because you knew that one day you’d have to walk away from your career to have kids.
And when you got out of school, job hunting was dismal. You weren’t really interested in the places that would hire you. But you had to do something to pay the bills.
So you took an in-the-meantime job, and you had some not-so-great relationships.
And one by one the years slipped by. You got new jobs and had new relationships.
But the jobs got worse, and so did the relationships. They don’t listen, they don’t support, and they take way more than they give.
You try to deny it, but deep down you know you’re sinking into a depressive loop. Doom scrolling on job boards and dating sites hasn’t worked in the past, yet it is your go-to action when things fall apart.
Do you know what doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result is called?
Yep–INSANITY.
At what point do you say enough is enough? At what point do you stop waiting for marriage and kids and start living your life NOW?
You know I love helping people get amazing, fulfilling careers they love! And I love the moment where people are finally willing to go after the best lives and careers for them NOW. When they stop waiting for the someday crap that may or may not happen.
So I am super excited about talking to Holistic Coach & Philanthropist, Carrie Reinagel. She spent decades chasing marriage and kids. And even started and ran a wellness company for 21 years while she “waited.” She sold her company and is finally ready to create the life and homestead she’s always wanted–by herself and on her terms.

#34 You Get One Life with Thriving Business Woman Michele Ostrowski
Wednesday Feb 15, 2023
Wednesday Feb 15, 2023
I know a LOT of people who are living a life and career that someone else said they should live. Even when that life is slowly draining the life out of them.
They told you to follow the rules, be loyal, and work hard. If you do that, then you will have security and be supported. You will be safe.
So you did it.
At first it was okay-ish. You told yourself, “I can do this. This is how it is right? I mean I did all the ‘right’ things. Once I pay my dues, it will get better.”
So you pretended you didn’t feel the pit in your stomach when they talked over and ignored you. You ignored the heart-sinking disappointment when you asked for what you wanted and they said no.
They implied they’d let you go if you wanted to do things your way. Everything you were ever “told to do” flashed through your head. And you understood.
Bend over backwards, sacrifice your happiness and integrity, keep your mouth shut, don’t rock the boat. And above all, shut down your spark, your creative force, and who you truly are.
And lucky you… for all of this you get a paycheck (insert sarcastic tone here).
Maybe you wondered about the generations before you. Did they sacrifice their soul and give up on their happiness too?
The thing is, every day you made the choice to stay. You weighed your spark, your joy, and your integrity against a paycheck. And the paycheck won.
I mean I get it, it’s scary to walk away and carve your own path…to go against that so-called “proven formula” everyone told you was the “right” way. But you only get one life. And it’s up to you to make the most of it.
Most people need to do this one step at a time. And honestly, that’s the best way. Because jumping to the end, without the middle steps, is like building a house without a foundation. Once a big storm comes along, it will collapse. There will always be storms, but when you build your foundation one step at a time, it will be strong enough to weather any future storm.
I love helping people create strong foundations for their dream careers. And I love talking to people who’ve already done it. We all can learn something from Michele Ostrowski.
She was raised in a male driven, religious cult. After a terrible trauma she asked permission to do what was best for her, and they said they’d have to “mark” her. She did it anyway, and step by step she carved her own path. Today she owns a company where she takes great care of her employees and pays them well. She raises them up and paves a way for them to thrive. The result is that they’re happier and do better work. She’s created an environment where everyone is winning.

#33 Turning Exclusion into Inclusion with Dr. Linet Mera
Wednesday Feb 08, 2023
Wednesday Feb 08, 2023
Do you remember way back when you were picked on you for being different? When they bullied you because you didn’t fit in? And sure, you eventually found people who accepted you, but deep down you never quite got over that feeling of exclusion.
You still look around and see how life, opportunity, and career seem to flow so easily for some people. But it was never that way for you, was it? You had to push back and fight for everything you have. Never getting confirmation that you were on the right track. And it made you doubt your every move.
When you shared your interests, teachers, counselors, and your mentors looked you up and down and told you to pick something else. You knew they thought you weren’t smart enough–that you couldn’t do it. You were discriminated against, underestimated, and sabotaged at every turn.
But still, you persisted. And when you stepped into the workforce, you kept fighting. Because you wanted to make a difference. And deep down you know you have something important to offer the world. You put up with the narcissistic and micromanaging bosses. You dealt with coworkers who purposefully exclude you.
And at every turn, you picked yourself up despite the anxiety attacks, the sleepless nights, and the creeping depression. But at what point does it end? At what point will you get to feel included, respected, and valued? When will advocating for yourself not create full-blown panic? At what point do you get to be the leader you know you were born to be?
The thing is, all that past strife has given you amazing superpowers. And when you learn to harness them, they’ll likely be the key to your perfect-for-you career.
This is why I love talking to people like Dr. Linet Mera on my podcast. Through navigating her own internal and external systems of oppression, she ignited a passion to empower leaders to grow inclusion. She made a career out of her superpowers. And today she is a fierce advocate for inclusion as the Co-Executive Director at the Unconscious Bias Project.

Did you try to make a career out of something you love only to hit obstacle after another and give up?
You’re not alone. So many people try to make a career out of what they love and fail.
They keep hitting obstacles. And over time, those obstacles cause even the strongest people to lose faith.
With each roadblock your parents' words ring in your ears…
“That’s a great hobby, but there’s no security in it.”
“Get your degree so you have something to fall back on.”
“You’ll never make money at that.”
And eventually…you decide it’s too hard.
So you give up your dreams to follow a “traditional” career path.
And you hate every second of it. Every day a little piece of you dies.
You wonder…
What if you had stuck it out? What if you hadn’t given up? What would your life be like now? Is it possible to do what you love and make a living?
But what if those obstacles were there to help you?
What if they were there to pivot you in the RIGHT direction. And what if they were there to help you overcome the REAL problems keeping you from getting what you want?
To make a career out of what you love, you’ll have to learn and grow from obstacles–not avoid them. You’ve got to overcome your fears of failure and people not liking you. You have to quit procrastinating, playing small, and beating yourself up. And stop comparing yourself to others! I promise you– it’s not impossible.
It takes flexibility, perseverance, faith, and trust in yourself to carve out a career you love. And it IS 100% possible. Just ask Shikha Kaiwar. A health condition made her chosen career physically impossible. Instead of giving up, she overcame every obstacle to carve out HER perfect career. Join us on Be the Wolf to find out how she did it.

#31 Turning What You Love into a Career with Cynde McInnis, Pursuer of Dreams
Wednesday Jan 25, 2023
Wednesday Jan 25, 2023
Can you remember the first thing that really lit you up? Made you so excited that you’d put off EVERYTHING else?
For me it was the movie Superman. When I had an opportunity to see the movie for a second time I jumped at it. I gave up coloring Easter eggs which was one of my FAVORITE things to do.
I wasn’t obsessed with Superman himself, I was fascinated by what he could do. That movie made me believe that it was okay to be different and be who you truly are. Even if others don’t appreciate it. And it made me believe that we could do superhuman things.
Today I have a career which makes me 40 times more excited than the Superman movie ever did. I get to use my unique gifts to help others get rid of their Kryptonite and access their superhuman powers.
To create the perfect-for-you career you have to do two things: discover what you love AND get rid of the Kryptonite.
You know…things like:
- Toxic bosses and workplaces
- People not listening to you
- Doubting yourself when things don’t work the way you want
- Procrastination
- Feeling too tired to follow through
- Feeling awkward at networking events
- Self doubt
- Fear of failure…fear of success
- Feeling triggered when your boss calls you into their office
- Thinking you’re not good enough
- Other people telling you not to do it or that you’re crazy
- Fears about money
- Etcetera…etcetera…etcetera
Let’s face it, this is hard. And most have never seen anyone else do it. It’s scary to do something you’ve never seen done. But Cynde McInnis did! She knew EXACTLY what she loved. And she had to trust herself and her gut to make it a reality.

Cynde bio:
For the past 29 years, I’ve talked with thousands of people about whales. Through the Whalemobile, my education enrichment program focusing on a life-sized inflatable model of a humpback whale (that kids go inside), I can provide an engaging learning experience to introduce a unit about whales or be the expert that comes in to close it and answer student questions. I use whales as the inspiration to get kids to start thinking critically about what they can do to protect our planet. My obsession for whales as a child has grown into a greater sense of responsibility to take action on behalf of the wild world. Now, I strive to cultivate that same awareness, respect and responsibility in the next generation of ocean advocates.

You may have heard it said that to GET something different in your life, you must DO something different.
The thing is, most people followed a standard strategy to get the career they have. And many of those same people are not happy with the outcome.
Go to college, so you can get a job→get a good job with benefits and a 401K, so you have security→ work hard, so they appreciate you and don’t fire you→ retire and THEN do all the other things you’ve wanted to do your whole life.
Most people were taught this is how you have a good life. And at one time that may have been an effective strategy.
But this strategy is outdated and does not work in today’s job climate.
First off, going to college will not guarantee you a “good” job. In fact, 39.5% of people who graduate college end up in jobs that do not require a college degree.
And more companies are choosing skills and competency over college degrees when hiring. (ie. 50% of IBM’s job openings do not require a 4 year degree) So even if you have the RIGHT degree, someone who can “sell” themselves confidently may very well get hired over you.
Second, there is no such thing as job security anymore–no matter how hard you work. Companies are laying off, downsizing, and selling all the time. In fact some companies look down on someone who has stayed at the same job for really long periods of time. They think you might not be willing to grow and learn to help move the company forward.
Third, who wants to wait until they retire to enjoy life? The fact is, people who suffer and sacrifice their whole life, often end up sick shortly into retirement. And then they can’t do all the things they put off in life.
Sure, some people are willing to suck it up for 20 or 30 more years. But I’m guessing you want to have a rich full life and career NOW.
The problem is, that there’s no standardized “formula” for how to get this. In fact, most people don’t even think it is possible. But it is!
And to do it, you will have to step out of your comfort zone and chart your own path–the one that’s right for YOU! It means doing something different than you’ve always done. It means doing something different than your parents did.
And that can be scary. But it is so worth it. And it’s why I love helping people chart and follow their perfect career paths
It’s also why I love interviewing people like Matthew Brownstein on my podcast. I want you to KNOW it’s possible. That you don’t have to wait until you retire, or have a ton of money saved to step into a career you love.
Matthew Brownstein saw a clear and big path ahead of him after a spiritual awakening. But to follow this path he’d have to overcome his own self worth issues. He’d have to be brave and step out of his comfort zone over and over. #29 Could You Have ADHD with Adult Therapist Kate von Achen
Wednesday Jan 11, 2023
Wednesday Jan 11, 2023
Everywhere I turn, another person is diagnosed with ADHD. And they always say, “Everything makes so much sense now.”
They finally have a reason why they struggle with:
- Can’t deal with stress
- Impatience
- Impulsivity
- Easily bored
- Can’t sit still
- Negative self image
- Lack of motivation
- Sleep issues
- Procrastination
- carelessness and not enough attention to detail
- starting new tasks before finishing old ones
- Emotional reactions
- Disorganized
- Distracted
- Can’t focus
- Losing or misplacing things
- Forgetfulness
- Restlessness
- Talking too much
- Blurting out responses and interrupting others
- Mood swings
- Irritability
But what does the diagnosis actually give you? Does it teach you how to live your life better? Does the amphetamine prescription get rid of the problem?
NOPE.
Dr. Gabor Mate believes that ADHD is caused in infancy by a stressful environment. It can happen when the caregivers experience financial, political, or emotional stress. And a sensitive infant picks up on that stress. Because the child can not escape, they’ll “check out” or dissociate. It’s a coping mechanism to escape the stress.
Once this strategy is learned, it becomes the go-to strategy for dealing with stress and feeling uncomfortable.
But what if you could make your ADHD work for you instead of against you? What if you could change your brain? And create new, healthier coping mechanisms for stress?
Don’t you deserve that?
This is exactly what Adult Therapist and AD/HD "Hypeman," Kate von Achen, is determined to do–for herself and others.
Join us for a conversation on diagnosis, misdiagnosis, and making ADHD work for you.
Don’t be a person who lets a diagnosis determine the fate of your happiness. Some of the most successful and happy people have “diagnoses.” The key to a fulfilling career is to find the one that fits the WHOLE YOU.

Kate von Achen is a clinical social worker working as an adult outpatient therapist in community mental health in Lawrence, Kansas. Kate’s journey into this line of work was anything but linear and makes perfect sense to those who have followed her at times chaotic journey. Overcoming (at times “self-created”) obstacles, running toward the flames while others run for safety, and being passionate about being of service to others has been the golden thread connecting the various hats worn internationally throughout her life. Finding out she is AD/HD at 42 and learning what that actually means has made her “at times chaotic journey” make perfect sense and has added tremendous value to her long “life experience list” she calls on in working in a community mental health setting.

#27 Rebuilding After Tragedy with Caitlin Doyle
Wednesday Dec 28, 2022

When employers don’t make room for your needs, it’s a sign that it’s time to go.
The thing is, most people are stretched to the max in career and life. There is no room to deal with BIG unforeseen circumstances.
But they happen. And when they do, most people will bust their butts to try to keep everything in balance–only to have it all crumble to the ground.
All because employers are unwilling to make space for them to navigate these life-changing curveballs.
It’s during these times that it is most important to be in a great job, otherwise you’ll be left standing on the edge of a deep, raging river with no way to cross.
If this happens, you’ll have to find a bridge.
And it’s often the road the bridge is dark and full of struggle.
Then… when you get there… the bridge is wobbly as F!
You’ve got to be willing to step anyway. And do whatever it takes to get to the other side. There is no choice.
One step at a time. Don’t look down. Keep moving forward. You can do it!
And finally, when you put your feet on stable ground, you might find yourself in a career you never imagined.
When Caitlin was fired while at her fiance’s funeral, she hustled to find her bridge to a new career and life. Where she ended up still surprises people!

Most people will follow and live by the set of expectations laid out for them (cult or no cult). Even when deep down they know it’s not right for them.
They will wait until life is beyond unbearable before they do anything about it. They’ll convince themselves things are okay enough so they don’t have to face the pain of dismantling their life.
But the reality is, you have to make a definitive choice to make things better, AND then you have to take action.
Tony Robbins says: People change when the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of change.
Sometimes it’s one big moment that pushes you to make the choice and take action. Other times it is a tiny moment that breaks the camel’s back.
Leading up to this moment, your body gives you clues and warnings that something’s not right.
These warnings show up as insomnia, excessive emotional reactions, stress, headaches, physical pain, or something worse.
But most people ignore these warnings. And if it gets too bad, they take a pill. And keep going no matter what!
How bad does it have to get before you are willing to take action towards change?
Amy Weitzman is a relationship coach who grew up in a religious cult. When her breaking point came she had to leave everything to dismantle layers of shame and false beliefs. And now she gets to have a great career and live life on her terms.

Did you give up on a dream?
A lot of people never expected to have a soul sucking career. When they were young, they thought they’d have amazing and meaningful careers.
The problem is, getting from point A to point B wasn’t so easy. Especially if nobody was around you to show you how to get that dream.
So you went to college, thinking you’d find a way to do your dream once you finished.
But bills must be paid. So you got a job. And it sucked
And over the years your dream moved deeper and deeper into the closet.
You’ve gone from job to job. Each one as bad as the last. Sure you’re making more money. Sure you’ve gotten the promotions. But you’re not happy.
Every now and then, you think about that dream. What if?
Life is passing you by.
Are you really willing to spend another 30 years on this path? Overworked. Undervalued. And overlooked? At what point will you say enough is enough?
The thing is, you deserve to feel passionate about your career. You deserve to wake up excited to go to work–every day!
Maybe that old dream is the key. Or maybe it’s something different.
The question is…Are you willing to take a chance?
Erica Pflueger decided to take that chance. She kept putting her dream on the shelf. But there came a point where she had no choice but to step into her dream. The road hasn’t been easy, but she’s willing to do whatever it takes to succeed. Because when you’re doing what you’re meant to do, the obstacles don’t matter.

There’s nothing worse than working hard on something, thinking you did great, and then getting feedback that you suck.
Some people take this with grace.
But for most people it stirs up self-doubt and feelings of not being good enough.
And when it happens, some people fight back and get defensive. Others jump into action to prove themselves. And some shut down and give up.
Maybe it started with your parents. Did they tell you to work harder or be different than you are? Did they get on your case when you messed up? You tried your best to follow the rules but it seemed like nothing you ever did was good enough. It made you wonder if you could ever do it right?
When you got to college, you thought you’d be free. But those feelings didn’t go away. You doubted your choices. Should I drop this class? Is this the right major?
Then you got a job–didn’t love it. So you tried another one, and that one sucked too.
You did what you were supposed to… wasn’t that supposed to guarantee you a happy life?
You know it’s time to make a move. Something has to change. But those doubts rise back up…
Do I suck it up and stay? Go back to school? Start a business? Switch careers?
What’s the right choice?
Even the most happy and confident people have doubts, but what separates them from other people is their unwillingness to stay in a crap situation and suffer.
They know how to push through the doubts, make a choice, and take action–without second guessing themselves. They also know it’s important to make a plan and stick to it.
Life is always going to throw you curveballs, and sometimes it’s going to suck.
The question is, how long are you willing to stay in a crappy situation and suffer–hoping it will get better?
Erin Kunert was a rule follower who followed a typical path of college after high school. The curve balls started coming in grad school and she was forced to pivot. Time and time again she had to push through self-doubt to carve out the perfect career for her. And along the way she discovered she was more capable than she knew.

#23 The Masks We Wear with Organizational Psychologist Kim Perkins
Wednesday Nov 30, 2022
Wednesday Nov 30, 2022
In every field there is a preconceived notion of how you are supposed to be. And most people will put on a mask to try to fit into those “ideals.”
This strategy may offer some benefits, but for many, the cost will be too high.
We are entering a new era where sacrificing your soul for work is no longer acceptable. People want to have it all! They want to enjoy their work, make a difference, AND be their authentic selves!
And sometimes to get to that place you have to walk the wrong path first. So you can truly understand why it doesn’t work for you. And from there you can step into creating the perfect career and life for YOU.
Join me and Organizational Psychologist Kim Perkins in a discussion about the masks we wear and how to change the culture to be a healthier fit for everyone.

Joy's Bio:
As a financial advisor at Edward Jones, a Fortune 500 financial services firm, my goal is to make a meaningful difference in the lives of my clients by helping them financially achieve their most important goals. I meet my clients at my office, their homes or wherever else it might be convenient. I am passionate about helping clients create personalized strategies and stay on track to help protect the wealth they have worked so hard to build.
I grew up in Texas and after attending college, started my career in the banking and investments industry in 1995. In 2007, my husband and I relocated to Lubbock, TX, while he pursued his PhD in ethnomusicology at Texas Tech. And it was in Lubbock that I joined Edward Jones as a branch office administrator and found a company that matched my passion for helping people.
In 2016, my husband, Dr. Ian Rollins, and I relocated to Denver, CO, where we adopted our two children: Jeremiah and Simone. Two years later, I achieved my long-term goal of becoming a financial advisor at the firm I loved so dearly: Edward Jones.
Since 2007, I have helped Edward Jones grow by recruiting financial advisors, and have served my regions as a branch office administrator mentor and coordinator, newsletter editor and on-call coordinator. In 2018, I became a limited partner with the firm.
I am passionate about volunteering at Edward Jones and within our community. I serve as a board member on the Five Star Education Foundation. I have volunteered at the 2015 Tour de Ted, the 2015 Special Olympics and have been a foster parent since 2013. I am an avid reader and love to play piano, explore and travel. I am deeply grateful for a career that allows me to give back to the community.

Does navigating your career feel like walking through a minefield? Nothing you do is ever right. It seems like your boss pushes your buttons on purpose. And no matter how hard you work, nobody ever appreciates what you do.
People are beginning to understand that trauma is at the root of why their life is not going the way they want. But before you stop reading, you have to know that trauma is not what most people think. You don’t have to have had an over the top horrible childhood to have “trauma responses” that will hold you back in your career.
You don’t have to look far to find a million quotes and memes about how certain behaviors are actually trauma responses.
- Perfectionism
- Having trouble standing up for yourself
- Saying yes all the time (even when you don’t want to)
- Feeling like you have do it all by yourself
- Staying super busy ALL the time
- Feeling reactive and triggered all the time.
- Always being the one to help
The fact is, many people who have these issues would never think they had trauma in their life.
But for many these issues take a toll in their careers and personal lives. They are burning out. Feeling on edge makes it impossible to get work done. They work hard and get taken advantage of. They procrastinate, fear failure, and don’t finish projects. And ultimately they don’t feel happy.
Check out this episode of Be the Wolf to learn what the actual definition of trauma is. And to hear Kathryn Wells’ story about creating success in her business through healing her trauma.

#17 Nature vs Nurture with Kerri Sanford the Medicare Maven
Wednesday Oct 19, 2022

Is it your genetics or is it how you were raised that determines who you end being? I think it is a combination of the two. And Kerri Sanford's experience supports my theory.
She was adopted at 6 weeks. And like many people who were adopted she never quite felt she fit in. But after meeting her biological family she is understanding why she is the way she is. And she is fully stepping into her true nature and who she was born to be.
